As a member of the Planning and Performance Leadership Team for Ardsley Middle School, Jodie shares what inspired her to volunteer in this role and offers her advice for others.
What would you say are the main goals for the PPLT in Ardsley schools?
It varies by school, but overall it's for parents, faculty and administrators to weigh in on the guidelines at the school. As a parent, it provides an opportunity to engage with the school on critical issues facing our students.
What are some of the topics you've dealt with in this role?
For example, we started this year by continuing a conversation from the previous year about the student code of conduct. We researched and discussed areas of responsibilities, accountability and opportunities for learning. We've also recently been discussing the role of artificial intelligence and how schools should engage with it.
How does a team with so many perspectives come together to make these decisions?
What's been very effective for the middle school is keeping everyone organized. Principal Horlacher sends out a schedule at the beginning of the year, sets the agenda for each meeting, and keeps to the timeframe to accommodate volunteer schedules. We even have "homework" after meetings to research what other schools are accomplishing or to read articles about the latest research. Our conversations are facilitated in a way that everyone’s perspectives are heard, and the core of our work is always what's best for the students.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I think it's important to be a part of your community. I don’t believe in complaining without doing the work, and as long as there is a need I'm willing to participate.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to volunteer but doesn't know where to start?
I started volunteering at events, and by the next year I was chairing the CRS Book Fair! It's a great way to meet people, although it can be nerve-wracking for those who aren't as outgoing. But once you make the connections, it creates a bigger community.
Applications for the PPLT are now open. Please apply here by June 1.
